You want to attract media attention to your product, event or reputation. A press release will do just that – if it is written the right way and followed up by phone calls and even face-to-face interaction with the writer, reporter or editor.
  
But before the press release comes a personal relationship with the media. From my experience working in the television news industry for more than seven years, I have made connections, contacts and friendships with the people inside the newsrooms. This is critical when it comes to understanding what they want in a story in order to pitch your story to the right person with the right spin.   

A press release provides reporters with an information subsidy containing the basics needed to develop a news story. Press releases can announce a range of news items, such as scheduled events, personal promotions, awards, new products and services, sales and other financial data, accomplishments, etc. They are often used in generating a feature story or are sent for the purpose of announcing news conferences, upcoming events or a change in corporation.
